Super 8 – Movie of the Week

twitter Super 8 Movie of the Week

Super 8

Super 8 is a JJ Abrams and Steven Spielberg film; the two have collaborated on this project to tell an extraordinary tale of youth, adventure, and mystery. Super 8 is a story of six friends who are filming a Super 8 movie called “The Case”, when they witness and record part of a disastrous train wreck. It isn’t until the military arrives and locks down the area that the friends realize something mysterious has escaped. A number of unusual events start to occur in their small town, and the crew quickly discovers what the mysterious thing that escaped is.

Super 8 is a story of perseverance, friendship, bravery, the coming of age, and even love. Although it’s rated PG-13, Super 8 is a film that most anyone will enjoy; whether you watch it alone, with a friend, or with a family member. JJ Abrams does a wonderful job of developing and crafting each character in Super 8. While they may look like kids, their sense of humor, courage, and even language at times (they do swear a bit) makes them feel more like young adults. There is also a true feeling of nostalgia for the slightly older generation. Those who remember the Super 8 films won’t be able to help but smile. Those who don’t, finally have a chance to experience it. It almost feels like this generation’s version of “The Goonies”

Another great thing about the film is that it really touches on multiple genres. Drama, Adventure, Comedy, Science Fiction, and maybe even Horror are all showcased. The acting is incredibly good given that most of the stars are young children. If you’re still not sure whether or not Super 8 is the film for you, go check out what others have had to say.

My opinion? The film is “mint” as the kids in the movie would say.

Super 8 was given the following scores:

Rottentomatoes: Super 8 – 82%
IMDB: Super 8 – 7.2/10

Featured Friday Film Noir – Brick

Film Noir Friday

Featured Friday Film Noir Brick Featured Friday Film Noir Brick

This week’s featured film for Film Noir Friday is the movie Brick. Brick is a movie starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt who plays a lonely teenager named Brendan Frye. Brick takes place in a a southern California high school where cliques run rampant. Brendan is a somewhat antisocial teen and avoids most of the crowds and their wild antics. For several days he receives confusing and unclear messages from his girlfriend Emily, and then finds out that she has been murdered. Her body is left in front of a large storm drain tunnel. Brenden hides her body in the tunnel and decides to take matters into his own hands and investigate the crime himself. All he’s left with are several clues including the works “brick” and “pin”.

Brendan is a quick witted and intelligent kid with only one real ally to help him in his investigation, his friend Brian. Brian helps Brendan get closer to the popular teenage crowd that Brendan believes had something to do with his girlfriend’s murder. He’s quickly subjected to the dark world of drugs and learns that his girlfriend was involved in something much darker than he had ever imagined.

The use of well-written, fast-paced dialogue, and a cryptic slang vocabulary makes Brick a film that grabs the viewers attention very quickly. It’s well directed and holds true to the crime, drama, and film noir genres. Brendan’s a persistent teen and the surprisingly complex sea of high school politics that he has to navigate through makes everyone in the film feel a little bit older than they’re supposed to be. Brick is one of those film noir films that you never expect to be worth watching, but once you do, you’re surprised at how great it is. What’s more impressive is that director Rian Johnson did all of the editing himself on an old Mac. If you’re in the mood for a dark film noir movie, enjoy witty dialogue, and can appreciate a good crime story, Brick is the movie for you.
